Friday Fiver: Characters

What book character would you say is the closest to yourself?
That's a tough one. I think we all identify with characters in novels, which is sometimes why we enjoy them or loathe them so much. I think if I identified with any character, it would have to be the main character in my own novel - Stephanie Carovella. She's tough on the outside but has a layer of vulnerabilities. She's analytical and likes to pull things apart and put them back together again. At times she acts before she thinks and at other times she over analyses. She wants to love again, but she's terrified of the consequences.

If I had to choose another character, I'd choose Taylor Jackson from J.T Ellison's novels for the same reasons.

Who is your favorite secondary or minor character?

I always had a soft spot for Louis de Pointe Du Luc. Yes, he's a crucial and central character within the Vampire Chronicles, especially Interview with the Vampire but he's never the main. That is always Lestat in every shape and form. I like Louis because there is a humane side to him, a gentleness. He helped shaped the folklore of Vampiresy people viewed them. Before Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, they were seen as Dracula type creatures. It made a difference.

Who is the most annoying character in any book you've ever read?

I've read more than my fair share of books in which I've wanted th emain character to bitchslap another character. Cathy from Wuthering Heights always comes to mind but it's Jimmy Blevins from Al The Pretty Horses that always annoyed me the most. I guess I should be glad in some ways too because if Jimmy hadn't caused so much trouble for John Grady Cole and Lacey Rawlins, they would not have had the adventure of a lifetime and it would not have been a coming of age novel.

Who is Your Favourite Romantic Couple?

I think many people will tell you the same characters. Mr Darcy and Miss Elizabeth Bennett. They're two of my favourite romantic characters of course, but the characters I really loved together arom Illona Andrew's Kate Daniel's series - Kate herself, and her lover Curran. I like the character's because they are both strong, hotheaded characters who against all odd up together. Their relationship works because they both give and take equally from each other and they are prepared to compromise.

What is your favourite ensemble cast of characters?

Each character in the Griffin Powell series by Beverly Barton.
